With the support of the PRO, UCR, and provincial forces, the national government managed to get the Chamber of Deputies to approve the reform of the Glacier Law with 137 votes in favor, 111 against, and 3 abstentions. Outside, on the streets, popular rejection was felt with a massive mobilization in front of the National Congress, and with marches and noise rallies in different points of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area and the country. Thus, once again in Mendoza under Cornejo, the constitutional right was prevented from being exercised to silence the protests against an unconstitutional, regressive, and flawed reform from its conception. "We cannot stand by with our arms crossed while they destroy the law that cost us so much effort to obtain and that ensures the water supply for 7 million people," they remark. This early morning, after one in the morning, the national government managed – with the support of legislators from PRO, UCR, and provincial forces – for the Chamber of Deputies to approve the reform of the Glacier Law, with 137 votes in favor, 111 against, and 3 abstentions. They did it with their backs to the people, who mostly showed their rejection in the government-manipulated public hearings held in Congress (even, Página 12 published a note revealing that a former SIDE spy), and in the streets, in defense of the Glacier Law. In this context, the "largest collective lawsuit in Argentine history" was launched to defend water, which denounces the unconstitutionality of the reform to the Glacier Law, and is promoted by Greenpeace, the Association of Environmental Lawyers, and the Environment and Natural Resources Foundation (FARN). After the betrayal of the citizen's will, we are going to justice, but we need you to stop this setback. Join the largest collective lawsuit in history to denounce the unconstitutionality of the reform to the Glacier Law. Now, in the face of the Glacier Law reform, we have no choice but to go to justice. More than 102,000 people were not heard in the public hearing. And they voted against the will of 80% of citizens who want to defend water. It was also voted against ignoring scientific criteria and the resistance of peoples throughout the country, whenever they tried to veto it or mutilate it in its key articles. Around the Congress, the national day of struggle in defense of water sources began with the traditional mobilization of retirees on Wednesdays, which included among their demands the rejection of the reform and the demand on legislators not to govern for corporations. There was a provocative repression by the Buenos Aires City Police in the vicinity of the legislative palace, and there were also detentions in the march in Mendoza. "We cannot stand by with our arms crossed while they destroy the law that cost us so much effort to obtain and that ensures the water supply for 7 million people." The now reformed Glacier Law (Law 26.639), voted in 2010, protected glaciers and the periglacial environment as strategic reserves of fresh water, prohibiting industrial, mining, and polluting hydrocarbon activities in those areas, defining these areas as public goods to guarantee human consumption and the ecosystem. Now, with the new reform enabled by legislators in favor of the mining lobby, these areas and resources will be unprotected.
